Directory Opt-Out
Student Directory Information & Privacy Options
Under federal law (FERPA) and California Education Code, our school district may release basic “Directory Information” to specific organizations without prior consent.
What is Directory Information?
This includes basic data generally not considered harmful if disclosed, such as a student's name, email, address, phone number, date of birth, major field of study, sports participation, athletic height/weight, dates of attendance, degrees/awards, and previous school attended.
Our Strict Privacy Guarantee
We never include a student's citizenship, immigration status, place of birth, or nationality in directory information.
Annual Privacy Options
Parents and guardians have the right to restrict this data. During the annual parent confirmation process held the week before school starts, you may request to withhold information across three distinct categories:
Category A: School & Community Publications
This covers internal school items managed by our district or approved partners such as Mammoth Mountain Community Foundation and Mono Arts Council
-
Scope: Includes the school yearbook, graduation/commencement programs, honor roll lists, theatrical playbills, and athletic team media sheets.
-
Impact of Withholding: Requesting a restriction in this category means your child’s name, photo, and achievements will be excluded from all school-sponsored publications and event programs.
Category B: Military Recruitment (High School Only)
Federal law requires districts to provide student names, addresses, and phone numbers to military recruiters upon request.
-
Scope: Contact lists requested by any branch of the United States Armed Forces.
-
Impact of Withholding: Requesting a restriction in this category completely removes your child's contact details from military recruitment lists. This option does not affect yearbooks or school awards.
Category C: Outside Organizations & Higher Education
This includes requests from third-party entities trying to reach our student body.
-
Scope: Local media covering student achievements, parent-teacher organizations (PTA), alumni groups, and colleges or universities recruiting students.
-
Impact of Withholding: Requesting a restriction in this category ensures your contact info is not shared with the PTA, colleges, or local news outlets.
Timeline and Legal Exceptions
-
Annual Timeline: Because this review takes place during your annual confirmation the week before school starts, your submitted privacy choices take effect immediately on the first day of school.
-
Changes Mid-Year: You may update these preferences in writing at any time. Updates received mid-term will be honored immediately, but the district cannot retrieve information that was legally requested and released earlier in the school year.
-
Legal Protections: Pursuant to California law, if your student is homeless or has exceptional needs, we automatically protect their data. No directory information will ever be released for these students without explicit, separate written parental consent.
Legal Framework: [EC 49061(c), 49070, 49073(c), 56515; FERPA; NCLB/ESSA]
